Chopperguy's TNT Blog

A biker, running to make a difference.

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

Why am I here? Every 10 minutes, someone in the US dies from a blood cancer. I will be training and running the 2009 Country Music 1/2 Marathon (13.1 miles) on April 25, 2009 with the LLS Team in Training, in honor of my stepson, 10 year old Blake Howard Wayland, and all those who are unable to continue the fight.

In 2004, Blake was what we thought was a normal healthy kid, playing roller Hockey in Ashland for the Vipers and football for the Kanawha Redskins. He also played basketball for a Glen Allen summer team and in July, participated in the JMU Summer Basketball Camp.

He enjoyed Trick Bike riding, Skate Boarding, Riding his Dirt Bike, shooting, hunting, fishing and most outside activities. He was also a pretty darn good golfer (Thanks to his mom and dad).

The week of August 23, 2004, Blake got a fever for a few evenings, but was active and unaffected during the day. After a trip to the peditrician for what we thought was strep throat, we were told we had to get to MCV hospital as soon as we could because he could possibly have Leukemia. That week he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He had no signs of the disease, and within 4 days of entering the hospital, he was in the pediatric ICU on a respirator, clinging to life.

When he was diagnosed, I created a website for him, so people could post messages to him, and I could keep everyone updated on his progress. Blake received messages from people all around the world. Visit his website here

After a hard fight, on March 1, 2005, Blake lost his courageous battle with Leukemia.

Why are YOU here? To help me make a difference. Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission. All donations are tax deductable and go directly to LLS and are recorded in my account! Corporate and company matching donation are also welcomed!

Although you can donate any amount you choose, my goal is to raise at least $4.00 per mile from each of my donors. Thats $52. Anyone contributing $100.00 or more will have their name and/or company name on a shirt that I will wear at the start of the race! Also, your donation is tax-deductible!

If you would like to donate, you can do so online by using the tool in the left menu. If you don't want to do so online, a check can be made out to "LLS" and sent to the following address:

I am completing this event in honor of Blake and all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

I hope you will visit my web site often.

Thanks for your support!
